Health Informatics Terminology Specialist (Near Metro in DC)

Based at headquarters in DC and will work part of the time at the Veterans Administration

This wonderful woman owned Government Contractor seeks an expert medical terminologist for an opportunity with the Department of Veteran Affairs. This position will be responsible for analyzing business needs and applying relevant standards and terminology methods and recommending implementation strategies. These strategies and resultant solutions must support advanced capabilities such as automated clinical decision support, knowledge management, knowledge representation and interoperable data exchange between the VA health applications, and between the VA and its healthcare partners including the Department of Defense, Indian Health Service and the Centers for Disease Control.

They are looking for candidates with the following skills and qualities.

Requirements
  • Masters level medical informatics or related degree or comparable combination of formal education and experience
  • Successful experience implementing controlled vocabularies supporting inpatient, outpatient and administrative business processes and supporting applications, especially in multi-hospital systems
  • Strong expertise with standard terminologies, ontologies and vocabularies used in multidisciplinary clinical settings including but not limited to SNOMED-CT, Clinical LOINC, HL7, Clinical Document Architecture (CDA) as well as clinical discipline-specific vocabularies
  • Ability to use MS Access and MS Excel for data analysis; experience accessing UMLS and similar repositories and resources using customary tools and techniques
Preferred
  • Advanced degree in at least one area of Healthcare Informatics
  • Knowledge and understanding current health practice standards highly desirable
  • Knowledge and understanding of Healthcare Information Technical Standards Panel (HITSP) activities, specifications and implementation guidelines
  • Experience with inter-agency information exchange and interoperability projects, especially between the VA and DoD
  • Experience using specialized terminology authoring, management and deployment tools
