Legal Billing & Accounting Specialist

A highly respected 50+-person law firm is seeking a Billing & Accounting Specialist to join its collaborative finance team. This is a great opportunity for someone with law firm billing experience who enjoys working closely with attorneys and contributing to a well-run, detail-oriented accounting function.
Schedule & Work Environment
• Hybrid schedule: 3 days in the office in DC after initial training period: 6–10 weeks fully in the office
• Flexible start time between 8:00–10:00 AM (8-hour day)
• Target start date: ASAP or after 2 weeks’ notice
The Role
This position plays a key role in managing the firm’s billing, accounts payable, and accounts receivable processes. You will work directly with attorneys and leadership to ensure accurate, timely billing and smooth financial operations.
Key Responsibilities
• Prepare, edit, and finalize client bills, including pre-bills and monthly invoicing
• Partner with attorneys to manage billing workflows, edits, and write-offs
• Ensure compliance with client billing guidelines and documentation requirements
• Process vendor invoices and employee reimbursements with accuracy and timeliness
• Manage client payments and apply cash receipts to outstanding invoices
• Track and input billable expenses from internal systems and vendors
• Bank recs
• Maintain client and matter records within the billing system
• Support general accounting functions, including journal entries and reconciliations
• Respond to billing inquiries and assist with audits as needed
What They’re Looking For
• 3+ years of legal billing experience within a law firm
• Strong understanding of billing cycles, A/R, and A/P processes
• Experience with legal accounting or billing software (training provided on firm system)
• High attention to detail and strong organizational skills
• Ability to manage multiple priorities and work independently
• Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate with attorneys and staff
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office, especially Excel
Team Structure
You’ll be part of a 3-person collaborative accounting team, working alongside a supervisor and firm leadership who oversee financial operations and provide support and guidance.
